    The original photo was damaged in a fire. The heat caused the photo's emulsion to bubble, which then cracked and peeled as it cooled. The restored photo was also sepia (brown) toned, a technique that makes the photo warmer and imitates skin tones. Sepia toning is optional in the restoration process.
